Their main concern is crime in the Gardere Area off Burbank Drive. The town hall meeting was about the Gardere Initiative, a group addressing substance abuse and other social ills in the Gardere area that adversely affect children and subdivisions.

BREC Youth 360 - This program officially began the first day of school, Aug. 11, said Chad Brewer, publicity and marketing director for BREC. Staff members guide students through activities that focus on recreation, health and wellness. Healthy snacks are provided, as is help with homework.

Any Gardere resident looking for a good, free book now has a couple of options, Jeanie Liehe said. Liehe, a volunteer art teacher at Gardere Community Christian School, said the neighborhood’s second Little Free Libraryis up and running by the school, 8538 GSRI Ave.

While his favorite subject is biology, he’s not such a fan of science. It doesn’t come as naturally to him, he said Monday while he waited for his tutoring session to begin at The Learning Center, the Gardere Initiative’s new tutoring center on Ned Avenue.
