National Preparedness Month September is recognized as National Preparedness Month (NPM) which serves as a reminder that we all must take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect us where we live, work, and also where we visit. Due to the success of last year’s theme, “Don’t Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today,” will be returning for this September with a continuing emphasis on preparedness for youth, older adults, and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. Thank you for taking time help make America more prepared for emergencies.
We Stand Strong
In partnership with Save the Children, 9/11 Day, and the Corporation for National & Community Service, Youth Service America is calling on youth leaders to help their communities be prepared to stand strong during disasters by organizing disaster preparedness awareness events community service projects (Prep Projects) on September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.
The Gardere Initiative/GYC received $1,000 to participate in this activity. GYC members will attend Worship Service at Faith Chapel. The theme is “Let Your Light Shine” because they will distribute 320 flashlights throughout the Gardere community following the Worship Service and pizza.
We will be meeting this Thursday, September 9 at 3:30pm at the Gardere Office to put labels on the flashlights.

Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

Today children from the Gardere Initiative were given an opportunity to share the joy of giving on Jasper and Jade Streets. Sis Patricia, Sis Florence, Marie and other volunteers prepared 78 bags that were decorated by the children. The children colored 78 cards that were dropped into the bags along with candy and chips. Coach Darin connected speakers to his van and led the way with Christmas music. Faith Chapel's scriptures were distributed as well. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well as the folks who came to meet them. It was a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

2014 Gardere Alliance Parade
Advocate photo by C. J. FUTCH -- The Gardere Initiative presented a Thanksgiving Holiday Camp over the school break, in collaboration with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and volunteers. The camp included art and craft activities for younger children, and a canoe trip to Lake Fausse Point for older children. Camp organizers are, back row from left, Cpl. Lisa Blackman, Dty. Melvin Edwards, Sgt. Chad Parker and Collins Phillips, a youth advocate for East Baton Rouge Schools; front row, from left, Yolanda Criss with AmeriHealth, Myeisha Smith, Gardere parent, Cpl. Lavontia Ealy, and parent Kimberly Stevenson.
The real meaning of Christmas is being celebrated throughout the Gardere CommUNITY. Attached is a listing of most of the activities planned for the holiday season. It began yesterday with the children from Gardere Community Christian School brilliant performance of the reason for the season. Their rendition, through dance and song, will rest in their hearts for years to come about not focusing on themselves, but Jesus Christ who came to save us from our sins. Congratulations to Nancy Zito and the entire staff and volunteers at GCCS!

Jarren Stevenson stands near his art work (football mermaid) at LSU Museum of Art's The Half-Time Show. This is a special exhibition and unveiling of the Museum's New Education Wall featuring artwork created by students from the Neighborhood Arts Project and the White Hills Elementary School Artwork Program. Standing with Jarren is Katie Pfohl, the museum's curator.
Mieshia was recognized for her helpfulness during the football season, Tyree for being on the Super Bowl Team and Jmariya for being a cheerleader. Isn't this wonderful?
The Gardere Initiative hosted its 8th Annual Love Fest with Worship Service, gifts distributed to almost 500 children and food provided by the South Burbank Crime Prevention and Development District. Helping to serve is Andrew Stevens, Commander, South Burbank Sheriff Office.
November 26, 2014 - AWESOME!!!! The kids look like they really enjoyed this activity. Thanks for all the support!
Thanks Edith, Ginger and Mary Jo....!! What a treat for the children. We had to take them to the park to burn off all that sugar. I must say it was fun and extremely creative.
You have blessed the lives of many with your "many" services to the Gardere community and, for this, we are thankful.
